I want to talk about something really important, especially for young people who are struggling. You know how some political decisions can have consequences? Well, sadly, one of those consequences is the impact on LGBTQ+ youth suicide rates. It’s heartbreaking to see that within just a week, these rates are already rising.
The Stats Are Alarming
39% of LGBTQ+ young people have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. That’s almost 4 in 10! And for transgender and non-binary youth, it’s even higher – 46% have thought about taking their own lives. LGBTQ+ youth of color are also disproportionately affected, with higher rates than their white peers.
The Reasons Behind It
It’s not just the numbers that are concerning; it’s also the reasons behind them. Anti-LGBTQ+ policies, victimization, and lack of access to mental health care all play a significant role. Did you know that 90% of LGBTQ+ young people say their well-being has been negatively impacted by recent politics? That’s staggering!
We Need Awareness and Action
We need to talk about this more, and we need to take action. Awareness is key to saving as many lives as possible. We can’t stay silent while our young people are struggling. We need to create safe spaces, support affirming communities, and provide access to mental health resources.
