- Make it legal in writing.
Do not rely only on marriage laws that can change with the political wind. Have wills, powers of attorney, and health care proxies that name each other as decision makers. These documents can stand even if laws shift. - Protect property and finances.
Put both names on titles, deeds, and major accounts when you can. For anything that cannot be jointly owned, have legal contracts or beneficiary designations in place. - Keep proof of your life together.
If your rights are questioned, documented history can matter. Photos, joint leases, and shared bills can all help establish your connection in legal or emergency situations. - Know your safe people and places.
Have a trusted network ready to advocate for you. Know queer-friendly lawyers, doctors, and organizations in your area before you ever need them. - Plan for emergencies.
Decide now what you will do if you face discrimination, eviction, or denial of services. This might mean having a bag ready with documents and extra cash or knowing where you can stay if you must leave home quickly. - Stay engaged.
Vote in every election. Support candidates and organizations that protect LGBTQ rights. The laws that matter most to your daily life are often decided at the local level.
You cannot wait for a crisis to prepare. Love is worth protecting and so are you.
