Gone Fishing: A Month of Adventure

“Gone fishing” has always been my favorite way to announce an adventure—back when it meant heading out on a well-earned vacation. And now, my husband Rick and I are truly “gone fishing” for memories over the next month.

Our journey kicks off this Thursday as we head to St. Louis for a week-long family reunion. St. Louis is more than just the home of the Gateway Arch and a slice of Midwestern charm; it’s where vibrant music, mouthwatering barbecue, and heartfelt reunions with family and friends make every moment unforgettable. Rick and I can’t wait to dive into the local scene, catch up with loved ones, and create some new inside jokes along the way.

Next up, we’re jetting off to Puerto Rico for a few days of exploration. Puerto Rico’s blend of colorful colonial streets, sun-soaked beaches, and a dash of mystery makes it the perfect stop for us. We’re particularly excited about uncovering some cool haunted locations—a playful nod to our love of a little spookiness amidst tropical breezes. Whether it’s exploring centuries-old forts or wandering historic neighborhoods, each corner promises a story waiting to be told.

Then comes the cruise phase of our adventure. We board the Norwegian Viva—a lively cruise ship that transforms long ocean voyages into an experience of its own. As we sail across the Atlantic, we’ll make stops at a series of incredible destinations. In Punta Cana, we’ll soak up the laid-back Caribbean vibes and stunning beaches. St. Maarten offers a unique mix of French sophistication and Dutch charm, while Cape Verde beckons with its rich cultural tapestry and dramatic coastal landscapes. Tenerife, with its volcanic majesty and inviting shores, is a sun-drenched haven. Finally, we’ll touch down in Lisbon, albeit for just one night.

Our brief stay in Lisbon is packed with potential. We plan to visit the evocative ruins of the Carmo Convent, a remnant of the devastating 1755 earthquake that still whispers secrets of the past. I’m sure Rick and I will have plenty of intriguing stories to share after our ghostly tour of this historical landmark.

From Lisbon, we catch a scenic bus ride to Madrid. This journey is not just about the destination but also about enjoying the rolling Spanish countryside—a picturesque backdrop to our travels. In Madrid, we’ll spend two delightful nights immersed in the city’s rich cultural scene. One evening, we’re embarking on a ghost tour that promises a mix of eerie tales and local legends. And, of course, no trip to Madrid would be complete without savoring an authentic Iberico ham sandwich, tapas, and a refreshing tinto (Spanish red wine) to toast the night.

Our adventure then speeds up as we board a high-speed train from Madrid to Malaga. In Malaga, we’re setting our sights on Torremolinos, a charming beachside town on the Costa del Sol. Known for its golden sands and vibrant seaside energy, Torremolinos will be our home base for a week of relaxation and exploration. Rick and I also plan to venture out on day trips to nearby treasures like Ronda—a historic town perched dramatically above a deep gorge, where every winding street and ancient bridge tells a story.

After a week basking in the Spanish sun and collecting countless memories, we’ll hop on another high-speed train back to Madrid for one last night before flying back to Mexico. By the time we return, our hearts and minds will be brimming with tales of family, mystery, culture, and the kind of adventures that only the two of us can share.

Now that’s a journey—one filled with history, humor, and a little bit of the supernatural. See you in a month. I’ll have a lot to share and blog after this trip. Adios!
