The saddest part of all this queer hate happening on the national stage right now is the children who are silently and secretly watching people they love hate them for who and what they are. I’ve seen the hateful right claim that children don’t understand sex at a young age and that if they think they’re queer, it’s because they were groomed by adults. This is a completely false statement.
At a young age, it’s about attraction. You may not understand why you’re attracted to a certain sex more, but that attraction is there, and it’s something you quickly realize is different about you compared to others. Most queer people will tell you that by age five, they understood they were different. They may not have understood why, and they may not have understood the functionality of sex, but they knew it from a point of attraction.
The mistake the hateful always make is equating sexual identity with the sexual act itself. Attraction is the first thing; it’s not something groomed or programmed within someone. It’s something that is. So, all these queer children seeing this hate are watching and hurting because it’s hard as a child to understand why someone would hate you for being who you are.
