2024 was a fantastic year for movies! Here is some thoughts about the films I was able to see so far.
Nosferatu and Emilia Perez were absolute standouts. The best two films of the year in my opinion. I also thoroughly enjoyed Longlegs and Cuckoo.
While many disagreed, I believe Joker 2 will be a future classic. Viewing it alongside The Joker reveals a brilliant, complementary narrative. Plus, I think they really tapped into the feeling of what modern musicals could be. Emilia Perez did this as well.
Last Voyage of the Demeter and Abigail were both entertaining. It certainly felt like the year of the vampire!
The First Omen pleasantly surprised me. I was worried it would fall into the trap of most recent horror sequels, but this origin story was genuinely scary and well-made.
Nuovo Olimpo was a standout among Italian films, capturing the essence of classic romances. I’m eagerly anticipating Queer and hoping it lives up to the same standard.
The Substance was a weird disappointment for me. The plot had glaring inconsistencies, leaving me questioning its purpose. The ending was particularly weak. However, Demi Moore delivered a career-defining performance, making my mixed feelings about the film even more perplexing because she really was that good.
All of Us Strangers was undoubtedly one of the year’s best films. I have seen it three times and each time it has moved me in different ways. It is brilliant storytelling.
I’m still looking forward to seeing Queer, Strange Darlings, Anora, and The End. I’m sure there are other gems I’ve forgotten to mention – we see so many movies throughout the year!
Hold Your Breath and Late Night with the Devil also deserve honorable mentions when I think about it and liked the Quiet Place sequel a lot. So many to talk about. And yes of course I did see I Saw the TV Glow.
Not sure what 2025 is going to offer. Looking forward to the new Wolfman coming out later this month. Looking forward to the new Frankenstein as well. Presence looks like one I have high hopes for because let’s face it Steven Soderbergh and horror should be a crazy good mix. 28 Years Later has a trailer that if the film is as half as disturbing it is going to be a horror classic. Looks like an exciting year ahead.
