You know, it’s funny how so many folks were caught off guard by the election results. Personally, yeah, I was let down, no doubt about it. But shocked? Not really. I mean, as a gay man pushing sixty, I’ve pretty much seen it all when it comes to human behavior.
Living as a gay man, you kind of get used to that undercurrent of homophobia within families that never quite comes to the surface. And let’s not even get started on the times we’ve been ridiculed for just minding our business. We’ve watched as our rights and well-being were tossed aside time and time again by the powers that be. I’ve been face-to-face with some pretty dark hate and discrimination in my day.
So, it wasn’t all that surprising to see half the population willing to sacrifice unity for a few bucks off their gas bill. It’s like, business as usual, right? Only this time, they didn’t have to hide it. They got the green light to bring their hateful attitudes out into the open. But come on, let’s be real. We always knew they were lurking in the shadows. We saw it every damn time.
