Reflections on 2016: Preparing for Trump’s Return

I remember those the first few dark weeks of 2016.

A person I considered a close friend insulted me within the first hour of Donald Trump being elected in 2016. They called me a “fag.” This happened.

That same week, police officers forced me to sit in the middle of a city street. They surrounded me in a threatening manner because I was exercising my right to peaceful protest. This also happened.

That same week I saw churches burning in the South. There was a great amount of LGBTQ hate happening. It took the form of attacks. This also happened.

That same week I received threatening and hateful messages from white supremacists telling me to shut up or else. This also happened.

2016 was the time when I had to face the shocking truth of what Donald Trump meant to our lives. 2016 was the time when I learned what my some of my neighbors, friends and family were willing to support.

This time I already know. I know who Donald Trump is and what he shows. I have seen it first hand. I remember last time and what those first few eye opening weeks were like.

This time it is no surprise. From that night in 2016 on I have been planning on what to do if or when this happens again. This time I am not in shock or surprised.

I’m fucking ready.
